Mobile 3D Laser Scanning:
A “tool in the toolbox” Not a Replacement

Land Surveyors are increasingly missing out on surveying work and slimming crews because they are not advancing in current measurement technologies. The most recent advancement is mobile 3D laser scanning and the speed an accuracy has surveyors questioning the longevity of their profession already considered near extinction. Understanding and appropriately responding to non-traditional ways will be a significant contributor to the success of the surveying profession and to Terrametrix.

Mobile 3D laser scanner, as known in the industry as mobile terrestrial lidar, collects survey grade data, at highway speeds, at traditional survey costs. Surveyors who understand and accurately position themselves to respond to this technology in non-traditional ways will be able to address their current field issues of safety, efficiency and accuracy.  Terrametrix has chosen the “StreetMapper 360 ®” system for its ability to expand surveying services into the following areas:

  • forensic analysis
  • utility mapping
  • coastal shorelines
  • highway documentation
  • city modeling
  • bridge clearances

These added values, along with solving reoccurring issues in the field, will promote the surveying profession in spatial recognition and documentation not unlike Real Time Kinematics (RTK) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) have done in the past.. A proven RMS error of less than 1cm makes mobile 3D laser scanning survey grade accuracy at traditional survey cost.
